Dealing With Defiance

by Nancy Thomas

  Attaching Parents:   Fighting Parents:

Use loving eyes "You will too!"
Calm assertive voice "Do it Now!"
Empathetic – "I can see you are not strong now" "Because I said so" (standing stiff with hands on hips)
"You can rest until you are ready" Yelling Swearing at child
"You can stand/sit/lay or kneel" Calling Child names
A gentle supportive hand on child’s mid shoulder/back of neck area (to calm) Repeating orders/commands
Take a deep breath and walk away Threats – "If you don’t I’ll…"
Are happy the child is resting and use the time to have fun yourself "You’ll be sorry"
Are happy for the child when child is ready to comply Grabbing/Hitting
Are patient while child is "resting and testing" Glaring Gloating when victorious
